Bombolulu: Not just a Pair of Earrings…
Living with a disability in Kenya can be really difficult. There is no government funding for those with disabilities, so employment is essential to avoid relying on begging as the main source of income. But in Mombassa, Kenya’s second city, a social enterprise that has been running for over 50 years has made a real impact on the lives of the disabled people it was set up to help.
The Bombolulu Workshop and Cultural Centre is a really vital and life affirming enterprise. It offers not only vocational training and secure employment, but also on-site housing so people don’t have to travel too far to work. There’s also healthcare provision, a nursery and a playing ground for children.
Bombolulu employs and houses people from all over Kenya. There are four workshops each specialising in a particular craft: jewellery, textiles, carving, and also mobility aids such as wheelchairs. Many of the craft products are sold at their own cultural hub, which is a destination for ethical tourists. This incorporates a cultural village with replicas of traditional Kenyan homes alongside demonstrations of traditional dance, music, and crafts. It is a good way of increasing income for the project and showcasing the work.
Many of the goods, particularly the jewellery, are exported globally. You’ll find delightful Bombolulu earrings in brass and silver plate for sale in our shop or online. They are elegantly and skilfully hand made. Dimples in the hammered metal work sparkle, geometric shapes hang gently and interlinked hoops tinkle.
These are earrings fit to complement any outfit, but they’re not just a pair of earrings… They’re empowerment, income and dignity too.
