What is jute?
Jute is obtained from the plants Corchorus olitorius and Corchorus capsularis. These plants are native to the Indian subcontinent and are grown throughout the year.
India produces 60% of global jute products, however, due to low wages many jute artisans are forced to live in slums due to inadequate pay.
Environmental benefits:
Jute is an eco-fibre, which means it has a low carbon foot print and helps to combat fumes caused by cotton production.
- Jute grows without the use of fertiliser and pesticides.
- Jute relies on natural rainfall, rather than wasteful irrigation systems.
- Jute absorbs carbon dioxide and releases oxygen much faster than trees.
