Bikes play a big part in life across Africa, carrying people and goods along bumpy roads where vehicles come adrift. These bikes have a big rear rack for an extra passenger or heavy load, but look like they're zipping along happily. Made with bottle tops collected from bars around Nairobi, each one of these is handmade and therefore utterly unique.
Living conditions in the Nairobi slum where these are made are pretty harsh with few basic amenities and scarce opportunities for employment. Zakale Creations is a shining light - providing training to young people, including taking some of them off the streets and away from drugs. Several of the trainees have gone on to create their own businesses which is a great testament to this pioneering and creative project.
